Cold Weather Paving

Many of our customers ask us if it is possible to install hotmix asphalt in the winter. The answer is yes, especially in Central Texas!  There is a common misconception that asphalt can only be paved in warm weather. Although cold weather paving comes with more challenges, it is possible.

Challenges to cold weather paving:

1.Product Availability- Finding an asphalt manufacture that will run year round is important. Luckily in San Antonio we have many asphalt plants that run year round.

2. Transportation-  Getting asphalt from the manufacturer to the job site without it cooling is very important. Here at Luke's Asphalt Paving, we use insulated truck beds to insure our material stays the correct temperature.

3. Instillation- Speed is very important when paving in cold weather. Having the right amount of skilled manpower on site is important when paving in colder temperatures. All handwork needs to be done quickly.

4.Compaction-The surface needs to be prepped and compacted within a 5 to 10 minute window when paving a 2" lift of hotmix asphalt. Having a skilled roller operator close behind your asphalt lay-down machine will insure a smooth surface that will last years to come.

If you are looking for a paving contractor in the San Antonio area that has the experience and capability to install your paving project properly, regardless of the season, contact Luke's Asphalt Paving for a free estimate.
